Signed Ina Nenortas Modern Enamel Copper Art Plate Midcentury Abstract Painting
HERES AN OUTSTANDING SIGNED ORIGINAL VINTAGE 1950S OR 1960S ENAMEL-ON-COPPER PLATE BY DORCHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS ARTIST INA NENORTAS (1929-). Measuring approximately six and three quarters inches (6 3/4) in diameter by three quarters of an inch (3/4) in height, Ina Nenortas created a wild and complex layered abstract design on the plates interior that is primarily rendered in burgandy-to-gold enameling with smaller details in purple, yellow, and orange enameling. The plates underside is counter enameled in variegated creamy bluish-green enamel with copper highlights. The design of this plate along with the techniques employed by Nenortas to create the are strongly reminiscent of works by Doris Hall and her husband Kalman Kubinyi. It should be noted that Nenortas lived in Dorchester, Massachusetts, at the same time Hall and Kubinyi lived in Gloucester, Massachusetts. There was only about a 40 mile distance between the two towns. Although no supporting documentation can be found at the time of this writing, it is quite likely that Nenortas studied with Hall and Kubinyi. Signed Ina on the underside bottom within the enamel itself, which was the standard way the artist signed her work. In addition, there is an original artists paper label that reads: Enamels By Ina Nenortas (this is only a partial label and somewhat difficult to read). Condition: Generally excellent and clean condition looks absolutely beautiful! But, and please read, there are a couple of small surface scratches on the interior and two small craze lines within the translucent enameling (these are very difficult to see). At age 88, Ina Nenortas is still a practicing artist in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Today, however, she is known for her mixed-media fabric constructions as well as her amazing quilts. It seems that the enamel arts were the earliest part of Nenortas artistic life, starting in the 1950s and lasting at least well into the 1960s. Unfortunately, not much is known. Perhaps an energetic art historian would like to undertake an all-important oral history with Nenortas to capture her story. The quality of her enamels is superior and many of the designs she created are actually quite distinctively her own (regardless of any potantial connection to Doris Hall and Kalman Kubinyi). LASTLY, SHOULD THE WORD "EAMES" BE USED IN THE SEARCH TITLE, IT IS THERE FOR THE PURPOSE OF REFERENCING THE MID-CENTURY TIME PERIOD OF THE 1940S THROUGH THE 1970S. 14 THIS ITEM IS BEING OFFERED BY DESIGN REFERENCES -- ESTABLISHED BY A FORMER ART MUSEUM CURATOR TURNED BOOKSELLER SPECIALIZING in OUT-OF-PRINT and PERIOD MATERIALS on the PROGRESSIVE IDEAS of MODERNISM and POST-MODERNISM in DECORATIVE ARTS and ARCHITECTURE, INDUSTRIAL and STUDIO ARTS of the 19TH & 20TH CENTURIES. 15 PLEASE -- NO REQUESTS FOR PHOTOCOPIES OF THIS ITEM.
