Many of his paintings are on wood but this unique pieces is cardboard and the verso is almost completely covered in pencil drawings of what look like fantastical caterpillars. The dimensions are 12"x14". The painting is in very good condition with age consistent wear. I believe the paint is enamel which is what he often used. You will notice the brushstrokes and several white spots. The cardboard has never been bent. Photos were taken in natural light and in a light box. Burnside was an American self-taught folk art painter. He was born in Baltimore but spent most of his life in the South, particularly Pendleton, SC.

His work was inspired by dreams of ancient/primal times as well as the African-American cultural experience. In additional to dogs, featured cats, tigers, wolves, and ancient kings and queens.

The dots around the edges of his work are believed to represent the tribes of man. Burnsides work has been featured in such prominent museums as the High in Atlanta and is in the Smithsonian's permanent collection.
