THIS ORIGINAL HAND PAINTED PORCELAIN PLAQUE DEPICTS A QUITE YOUNG WOMAN WITH EXPOSED BREAST, POSING AS A WATER CARRIER. SHE LOOKS QUITE EXOTIC WITH DARK SKIN, HAIR AND BROW, PERHAPS NORTH AFRICAN OR EGYPTIAN. SHE MAY JUST HAVE BEEN THE HISPANIC MODEL THAT DAY IN ART CLASS! PAINTED IN 1914 BY E M WELLMAN.
PLAQUE IS UNMARKED ON BACK, I BELIEVE IT IS A FRENCH OR GERMAN PORCELAIN BLANK EXPORT FROM RIGHT BEFORE THE WAR FOR USE BY CHINA PAINTERS IN THE US. CHINA PAINTING WAS STILL A BIG DEAL IN THE TEENS; THIS IS A NICE EXAMPLE BY AN ACCOMPLISHED ARTIST. IT IS IN ORIGINAL FRAME FROM A SHOP IN NEWARK, NJ. FRAME 8 1/2:"X 11 5/8", PLAQUE 7 7/8"X 4 3/4". PLAQUE IS IN AS FOUND CONDITION WITH NO BREAKS, CRACKS OR REPAIRS.
VERY LITTLE TO NO SURFACE WEAR OR SCRATCHING. COLORS LOOK STRONG AND UNFADED. SOME MINOR CRAZING, NOTHING DISTRACTING. BACK OF PLAQUE LOOKS FINE WITH SOME LIGHT DIRT, BUT IT HAS BEEN IN FRAME AND UNEXPOSED. FRAME IS OKAY, BUT THERE IS TYPICAL WEAR TO CORNERS AND EDGES; ONE UPPER CORNER ACTUALLY HAS SOME OF THE MOULDING GONE, SEE PICS.
ORIGINAL PAPER BACKING GONE FOR THE MOST PART.
