The copper plate is 6" x 8" and the image area is 5.5" x 7.25". It's in very good condition, with vivid colors and no chips or cracks in the enamel. A notation on the cardboard backing board reads No. B-102" and gives the title as "Green Wing Teal. The same notation is written on the back of the copper plate itself. A self-taught artist living in Southern California, Max Karp was known for his oil paintings of birds and insects in his early career. He became interested in the enamel process in the mid-1960's, teaching himself the copper enamel technique.

Since he began on a small scale before progressing to larger copper enamel paintings I think this is likely one of his early works in this medium. From the notations on the back I think that this picture was framed by the artist's studio. The 10.75" x 12.75" x 1.2 wood frame has gilt inner and outer edges surrounding a dark blue rectangle and enclosing a white fabric inner frame. The outer gilt edge has a chip near the upper left corner and the fabric of the inner frame is slightly foxed.

Since the frame was originally given a distressed look these defects detract less from it than one might expect and instead contribute to the intended impression of age. Max Karp created his highly prized enamel on copper pictures using copper plates and colored glass powders.

This was a painstaking process which produce numerous pieces with imperfections which Karp would reject and destroy. Many of his pieces took 30 to 40 color firings to produce.
