David Karp enamel on copper painting

This is without a doubt the best painting I have ever seen done by Max or David Karp. The colors are beautifully done and the setting in Paris is perfect. David Karp was the son of Max Karp known as the "Father of Enameling". Like his father before him, David chose to dedicate his artistic career to the art of enameling so cherished by his father. His delicate and sensitive approach to art is a salute to his father.

Karp's career was cut short at an early stage as he died in 1989. Max Karp was born in 1916 and was a self-taught artist.

He began his career by creating oil paintings of various species of birds and insects for his father who was an ornithologist. It was in the mid 1960's that Karp became interested in the enamel process. He was rare among contemporary artist in that he used enamel for his artistic works.

He perfected this unique process of art and his kiln fired paintings are collected throughout the entire world. In the 1970's Hamilton Mint commissioned Max Karp to create four paintings representing the seasons of the year. These were then issued as limited editions.

Karp is also well known for his 20" x 24" portrait of acclaimed opera singer Beverly Sills and holds a place in the collections of other famous people who appreciate this lost art.
