This beautiful Tortoiseshell and hand painted art glass vase is quite a rarity to find in this coloured glass decor. The original patent for Tortoise coloured glass was registered in London on the 25th of October, 1880 by Francis Phol and S. Both men, from Europe had the glass produced in Germany for export.
Francis Phol was the creative visionary director for Josephinenhutte, a Silesian glassworks from Germany founded on the 7th of July, 1842 by Count Leopold von Schaffgotsch. Francis Phol worked at Josephinenhutte from 1842 to 1882.
The ground glass colour is like honey and the mottled specks are brownish-red. Applied base has a unique footed cut design with hand painted "scribbles" of gold through out. The botanical scenery is beautifully hand painted with enameling and gold overlay.
Various floral sprays and bird in flight is shown on one side of the vase. Brushed gold accents on the rim. Hand etched signature on the base, R 3 2 or 9 5. 7.75 to be exact.The rim is 2-1/4 diameter. The base is 3-5/8 diameter. The wooden base is not included.
