HERES AN OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL VINTAGE 1964 MIDCENTURY ENAMEL-ON-COPPER PLAQUE / PAINTING BY CLEVELAND, OHIO / JERUSALEM, ISRAEL ARTIST HARVEY KLINEMAN 1937-? Please Note: Harvey Klineman entered this abstract enamel plaque in the 1964 Forty-Sixth Annual May Show at the Cleveland Museum of Art where it received a Jury Mention. To this end, this abstract enamel plaque is shown and described in the May 1964 Bulletin of the Cleveland Museum of Art. As you can see from the photographs shown above, Klineman created what is really an enamel-on-copper abstract color-field collage-painting. He began with a heavy-gauge sheet of copper on which are layers of enameling, small pieces of copper cut-outs, textured surface areas, engraved areas into the coppers surface, and deliberately created areas of firescale.

Klineman mounted his enamel abstraction into a dark-stained wooden framework which is backed by a larger oak board that displays a number of worm holes and intentionally-created surface imperfections. For the realm of modern American enameling in the year 1964, Klineman was creating a cutting-edge artistic statement with this work.

It displays a highly idiosyncratic non-objective style that is far removed from what most enamelists were pursuing. The original vintage midcentury enamel-on-copper plaque / painting itself measures approximately seven inches (7) in height by eleven inches (11) in width. The outer dimensions of the oak board are approximately ten and five eighths inches (10 5/8) in height by eighteen and three quarters inches (18 3/4) in width. Signed on the backside with a series of original paper labels from the Cleveland Museum of Art, one of which provides Harvey Klineman as the artist and that the work was exhibited in the 1964 May Show. Condition: The enamel plaque itself is in excellent condition with only a small amount of age related dust and grime.

The black-stained wooden frame and larger oak board backing are in very good condition with some small scuffs and markings here and there. Please scroll down to read the artists biography about Harvey Klineman!
