18th Century English Battersea Enamel Plaque 1765 Provenance Mrs Nellie Ionides

An English miniature 18th century enamel framed plaque dating to the 1765 period which is just the perfect addition to your discerning York House, Battersea or very early English enamel collection. Of rectangular shape with polychrome painted decoration depicting the classical scene and diamond mirror of Rinaldo and Armida, from the epic poem'Jerusalem Delivered'.

This 16th century poem written by Torquato Tasso was the inspiration for paintings by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Francois Boucher, Francesco Hayez, Nicolas Possin, Louis de Boullognne and Van Dyck to name but a few. This exquisite enamel on copper plaque is housed within its original 1765 Gilt metal mount with ribbon decoration and twist loop suspension. This enamel plaque was made with this fame, it is NOT a snuff box lid or any such lid, luxurious enamel plaque pictures were the height of opulence at this period, see the book reference below for identical examples.

Labels to the rear give provenance and collectors number 1212 from the collection of The Honourable Mrs Nellie Ionides. See English painted Enamels by Therle and Bernard Hughes for some illustrated examples of the Ionides collections. Size: Width 3 1/8 inch (8 cm) by height 2.75 inch (7 cm). Depth 1/8 inch (4 mm).

Condition: A few small hairlines that are so common on enamel pieces from this period. One triangular area of cracking at 5 o'clock. Please excuse the studio light reflections on the curved edges.
