Regarded today as one of the greatest miniaturist painters. Painting of a Musketeer /Soldier in 17th cent. Measures 4 x 2 3/4 and Original Frame measures 10 ½ x 9 ¾. Internet: Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier (1815 - 1891) An important figure in French painting and one of the best history painters of the 19th century, Ernest Meissonier excelled in the production of small but highly detailed history paintings. He specialized in figure painting with historical costumes, often taken from the 18th century. He was also noted for his etching. From the age of 30 onwards, he received numerous awards, including the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor - the first painter to be so honored.
The best collections of his work are in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, and the Wallace Collection, London. Painting is in very good condition, Original back of frame has old tag, some tears and tape used to repair. Please review photos to verify.
