Antique Silver Arts & Crafts Painted Enamel Buckle Possibly By Liberty or Dawson

Antique Silver Arts And Crafts Painted Enamel Buckle Possibly By Liberty or Dawson. Enamel plaques vibrantly painted with trees. One also has an armorial sheild - this may be a generic decorative feature but it seems more likely that it was painted specially for a customer with their coat of arms (too indistinct to distinguish). I collect Arts & Crafts painted enamels and I acquired this about 16 years ago. Ive never seen another one quite like it.

To see buckles with painted figurative enamels as opposed to coloured enamels is very rare. The last picture shows a pair of buttons and is taken from the book LIBERTY STYLE by Victor Arwas published by Parco. The buttons were owned by Editions Graphiques Gallery Mayfair. The gallery was then owned by the respected authority of art nouveau and arts and crafts Victor Arwas. The buttons are catalogued as by Liberty although they are not marked and they dont seem to be in their original case.

The buckle is remarkably similar enough to the buttons to attribute it to Libertys. However personally, having g handled a lot of arts and crafts enamel over the last 40years, I think one should keep an open mind and Nelson and Edith Dawson should also be considered if there isnt a marked or catalogued definitive Liberty example. No hallmark, test as Silver.
